I bought a Compact Compos Tumbler, and my mother and I collect food scraps ( carrot peels, lettuce ends, coffee grinds etc.) for about 4 weeks them mix it with brown leaves, fresh grass clippings, and manure. We have a trash can in her backyard to collect the food scraps and the last time I was there to dump my scraps I noticed a lot of maggots in there. Can this still be composted? Are the maggots a bad sign?
Natures way

Maggots are natural in decaying material.  They won't hurt anything, but they turn into flys which can be a nuisance near the house.  Check out the Groups.  A world of information in the "Composting" group.

Stay natural,

David

Let's look at each step of your compost path --

Annals of website glitches - I just spent half an hour writing a useful response from experience & the Drupal email system ate it - which has happened before - but this time "redo" did not help. I will submit a Bug Report & when I have time will rewrite my comment in a Word document & paste it in. With the deadlines I have today on a team project, that will be tomorrow or the next day.

sounds like "Soldier Flies"

Soldier Flies/ Black Solder Flies eat organic matter, just like redworms. Unlike earthworms, they do not stay in the ground/compost pile. They fly around & lay more eggs. Do a search on them, you will learn more then you need to know.
